Introduction
JOHN ARCHBISHOP OF SOUTHWARK
SPES NON CONFUNDIT. “Hope does not disappoint” (Rom 5:5).
In the spirit of hope, the Apostle Paul addressed these words of encouragement to the Christian community of Rome. Hope is also the central message of the coming Jubilee that, in accordance with an ancient tradition, the Pope proclaims every twenty-five years. In the Bull announcing the Ordinary Jubilee of 2025, at a moment in history in which "heedless of the horrors of the past, humanity is confronting yet another ordeal, as many peoples are prey to brutality and violence" (Spes non confundit, 8), the Holy Father calls on all Christians to become pilgrims of hope. This is a virtue which must be sourced above all in the grace of God and in the fullness of His mercy. It is to be rediscovered in the signs of the times, which, encompassing "the yearning of human hearts in need of God’s saving presence, ought to become signs of hope" (Spes non confundit, 7). In order for the faithful to obtain the Jubilee Year Indulgence I hereby decree that The Shrine of St. Jude, FAVERSHAM is designated as a Jubilee Church in this Archdiocese of Southwark for the duration of the Jubilee Year- 24th December 2024-6th January 2026
Reflections
We are delighted to announce a new weekly reflection series inspired by the Jubilee theme: “Pilgrims of Hope.” Each week, members of the Carmelite family and friends will share personal reflections on how Carmelite spirituality nurtures and guides hope in their lives. These reflections are designed to inspire, support prayer, and foster spiritual growth. The series will begin on 6 January 2025, and we invite you to join us on this journey of faith and renewal.

Jubilee Poem
Pope Francis has declared 2025 a holy year.
A year for Pilgrims of Hope.
The Carmelite shrines of St Jude, Faversham and The Friars, Aylesford
Are dedicated places of pilgrimage for the Holy Year.
As a Pilgrim of Hope visiting one of the shrines
the logo invites you and peoples of all cultures
to journey together
to build a better world.
Despite stormy seas,
we are inspired by our faiths and anchored by hope.
Your visit will be blessed
if you pause for a moment to pray.

The Jubilee Prayer
Father in heaven,
may the faith you have given us
in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother,
and the flame of charity enkindled
in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
reawaken in us the blessed hope
for the coming of your Kingdom.
May your grace transform us
into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel.
May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos
in the sure expectation
of a new heaven and a new earth,
when, with the powers of Evil vanquished,
your glory will shine eternally.
May the grace of the Jubilee
reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,
a yearning for the treasures of heaven.
May that same grace spread
the joy and peace of our Redeemer
throughout the earth.
To you our God, eternally blessed,
be glory and praise for ever.
Amen
